Discus have a reputation and I can see why. Having had them for quite a few years now I can guarantee they will get ill, they will stop eating and they will lose their colours. The reasons and causes for this are many in addition to the others things that can go wrong. Its best to avoid such issues with great maintenance and care. But despite your best efforts one or all of the below will happen at some point and you need to be ready and prepared. The faster you react the better the outcome will be.
Some items are essential for successfully keeping these fish. I would always recommend you have a hospital/quarantine tank running along side your display tank. Its easier to treat a single fish than a full system.
One of the most frustrating Discus fish issues. Im not sure my tank has ever been fully fluke free. They obviously come in on fish or plants, but once theyre in, theyre very difficult to eradicate. Ive stripped tanks to bare bottom and treated weekly for 6 weeks only for flukes to return. These will kill your fish if left.
This oddly is quite a useful ailment for the fish keeper. If your fish has got a cloudy eye it doesnt matter how clean you think your tank is, its clearly not clean enough. Increasing your water changes will fix this one. But if its happened you need to find out why and avoid it happening again.
Hole in the Head or HITH is a common aquarium problem for Discus and can be fatal. You need to catch this one quickly. If you see eroded spots, like small pits or sores, white protrusions on your fishes head do not ignore and cross your fingers. A few things need to be avoided to keep clear of this one.
Spironucleus Vortens is probably the least talked about parasite in this hobby but Id bet all discus have it and are never really clear of it. Some just handle it better than others. If youve got a fish thats eating lots and active, but losing weight and has white poo this could be your issue. Likely the cause of your HITH issues.
