You want to keep Discus fish so set the aquarium up for them. There are some complementary fish that are happy with Discus and some can be a benefit making them perfect tank mates.
ESSENTIAL TIP - Always quarantine any new additions to a tank. Failure to do so can/will end up with problems.
The Lemon Tetra is an excellent shoaling fish for the Discus tank. Best kept in a group it makes light work of cleaning up uneaten food from the Discus. And if your water is good they go a nice yellow colour. A tightly shoaling fish that will not cause any issues for your Discus collection. The perfect Discus fish tank mates.
Highly recommended - easy to keep, and excellent for tidying up after a Discus feed.
These little fish love being in a group so get 5 or 6. They do well at Discus aquarium temperatures and and should be kept with a soft sandy substrate. They will keep your sand clean and turned over. They are an excellent and entertaining addition to a tank, patrolling in groups and cleaning up any uneaten food they find on the sand.
Highly recommended - easy to keep, entertaining to watch and a good fit for you Discus parameters.
Be careful when buying a pleco, some get very large and some can cause Discus issues by taking a liking to the Discus slime coat. The Albino Bristle Nose Pleco however is an excellent addition to an aquarium . Only growing to 4 ish inches his cleaning skills are fantastic and I think one of the reasons I do not have any algae issues in my tank. They like the odd slice of cucumber or courgette but he literally vacuums up any meaty left overs and is thriving in the Discus temperatures.
Highly recommended - easy to keep and excellent at cleaning up
These are great fish and I've tried many times to keep them as tank mates for Discus fish. They like the high temperature and do not seem to both the Discus. Unfortunately in my aquarium I have not had much success. Not sure on the reason for that but they are a beautiful little fish (getting to a few inches long) and if I could have a small group in the tank I definitely would. They just dont seem to like something in my tank. I presume its pH or the fact I have quite hard water.
Look very nice, seem tricky to keep in certain water parameters.
An excellent choice for Discus fish tank mates . Large enough not to be eaten and also fast, looks stunning in a large group and adds nice flowing movement to a tank as they shoal around. Perfect for eating missed smaller particles of food too and thrives at the higher temperatures of a Discus aquarium. Very easy to keep and a tough little fish which wont bother your Discus. You cant go wrong with a nice group of these.
Highly recommended, treat yourself to a nice sized group.
There are many Tetras you can add to a Discus fish tank. The nicest in my opinion being the Cardinal Tetra. The Cardinal is a bigger and has more colour than the Neon Tetra and when added in a large shoal they look fantastic in the aquarium. They make excellent work of eating the smaller fragments of food after a messy Discus feed so they are perfect tank mates. I believe they can become a Discus snack if you are unlucky. If it fits in a Discus mouth it will get eaten.
Caution - they could become a DIscus fish snack once they fit in a Discus mouth.
This isnt a complete list of Discus fish tank mates, just some fish that I have tried and most I have had success with. They like similar water parameters to Discus and most importantly do not mind the higher temperatures that a Discus aquarium requires. They also do not chase, bully, stress or compete with the Discus for food. Discus tank mates need to be the less boisterous and certainly not aggressive fish. Check for yourself before adding a fish in with Discus and dont do it if youre honest and think it wont work.
